The radical block within the demonstrations against the judicial reform (Israel, 2023). An attempt to challenge the Israeli hegemonic order
From January to September 2023, a vast movement of opposition to the judicial reform project led by Benyamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies took place in Israel. Strongly nationalist, this movement did everything possible to avoid tackling the question of the occupation of the Territories conquered in 1967 by the State of Israel, let alone the colonial domination it imposes on Palestinians. A coalition of individuals and organizations, however, has formed on the fringes of this movement and called for “justice and equality for all from the river to the sea”. Week after week, its members have marched through the country’s main cities with slogans denouncing the occupation, apartheid and the ongoing Nakba. This article examines this coalition, referred to as the “anti-occupation bloc”: its attempt to challenge the anti-reform movement by asserting the centrality of the Palestinian issue, as well as its achievements and limitations. It is based on fieldwork carried out between February and June 2023 in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
