Pink triangles in the ballot box? The role of homosexuality in individual attitudes to politics and voting

Sexuality and social class: hierarchies, distinctions and politicisation
By Mickaël Durand

This article explores the role of homosexuality in the relationship to politics and voting. Based on 90 semi-structured interviews with self-identified gays and lesbians, it shows that the role of homosexuality in the individual relationship to politics and voting depends on individual politicisation. More precisely, the role of homosexuality in the relationship to politics refers to the articulation between the political competence of the individual, her system of value, and the dynamics of conflictualisation of homosexuality, showing thus that the role of sexual belonging in the relationship to politics is not mechanical. Social class then appears through the fact that the dynamics of conflictualisation of homosexuality is modulated by the social environment of the individual.
