The CGT, a (more or less) organized anarchy?

Special report: Trade unionization in France

This article aims to highlight the CGT’s organizational functioning by following the implementation of 47th Confederal Congress (2003) decisions around structural reforms and financing implemented to develop unionization. The way professional, departmental and local union branches deal with these decisions shows that, contrary to dominant stereotypes, the CGT’s organization is based on structures that are very concerned about their autonomy and are linked by weak ties. This leads to a situation of “organized anarchy”, in which the leaders’ power over the organization’s orientations is limited.
